plaNYC - Transportation

These images are originally from this PDF. They are part of Mayor Bloomberg's plaNYC 2030 initiative, which "challenged New Yorkers to generate ideas for achieving 10 key goals for the city's sustainable future."

On the whole these graphs are informative, but I think too hard to read. The juxtaposition of the "area" graph and the various histograms is confusing. However, they clearly help to visualize the various parts of income and expenditures, and how they relate to one another.

Out of them, we can also see a very clear model that the people behind the project have used -- they expect (or in the case of financing, set) the relative fractions of various pieces equal to one another, and then showed a constant growth. As a model, this will turn out to be false, but it is probably the best we can do for lack of knowledge how government decisions will be made in the future.
