Beijing's Blue Sky Count

The first thing I noticed about this graph was that it reminded me of Tufte's chapter on Data-Ink maximization. While I found several of his new graphs quite difficult to read, I agreed with his suggestion of using a white grid to show coordinate lines better than ticks. An example can be found on pp127-8 of VDQI. This graph does a good job of showing an increase of blue sky days over time. The binning is consistent, and it seems fairly self-evident. The major hitch with this graph is the data itself, whose integrity has been challenged. Having been to Beijing in recent years, I have a hard time believing that air pollution really has improved this much.
