The Economist usually has great graphs, but this is probably an exception. There is a lot of chartjunk from the background picture, the colors, and the font. Interestingly enough, the graphic is mostly illustration; very little of the ink used contributes to the data. The axis lines are kept to a minimum; an elimination of the chartjunk would yield a very useful and easy to read graph.
