
This graph, which appeared in the New York Times, is from September of last year. I think it was designed to tell a story rather than to compare data sets. The graph shows an inflation-adjusted index of housing costs since 1987, but it also marks the appearance of skeptical books and articles in the years leading up to the collapse as well as a remark made by the Federal Reserve Chairman, who was trying to downplay the seriousness of the collapse. Once you read all of the text, it actually reads like an editorial in graph form.
