A musical representation of quantitative data

This is maybe sort of the opposite of what this class is about, but this has been bouncing about the internet: a musical representation of pi. I know nothing about music or math, so I have no idea why or how they did this, or what it means. Does anyone have any critiques of the visual display that accompanies the music here? Of the underlying concept?
