This is an interesting graphic I found on the Economist's website: it's a digitized version of an original developed in the mid 1850's by famous British nurse Florence Nightingale, who was also "an accomplished statistician". It shows the magnitudes and causes of deaths in the Crimean War. The concentric-circle design would work better in the graphic included an actual grid of circles; as it is, the distances from the center are fairly difficult to read.
