ARod's Spray Chart (MLB.com)

This is an interesting type of chart, sort of a unique adaptation of a polar graph known as a "spray chart", which shows the locations of where various players have hit the ball. Here's a particular example for Alex Rodriguez's history of hitting in Yankee Stadium; it won't let me leave anything turned on, so I'll suggest you turn on just the doubles for all seasons, since it becomes nearly impossible to read with too much data.

This would be an interesting graph on which to do small multiples. Some suggestions:
  • Same player, same stadium (I suggest using the player's home ball park for the largest sample), different types of hits. See if the player tends to hit the ball to a particular area and/or get hits/outs more if he hits to a specific area. For example, ARod seems not to get any groundouts to the extreme right side, or any flyouts to the extreme left side at Yankee stadium (you could then see if this is the same everywhere).
  • Same player, different stadium (don't use the player's home ball park or any other stadium he frequents), same type of hits. For example, does the Green Monster change where ARod hits his doubles?
  • Different players, same stadium, same type of hits. Do particular stadiums cause certain effects, like doubles hit to a particular gap?
